Relative Position
The position: relative;
value in CSS is used to position an element relative to its normal position in the document flow. Unlike position: static;
, which is the default and doesn't allow for positioning adjustments via offset properties, position: relative;
enables you to move an element from its normal position using the top
, right
, bottom
, and left
properties.
Characteristics of position: relative;
Normal Flow: Initially, the element is laid out in its normal position, just like a
static
element.Offsetting: You can use the
top
,right
,bottom
, andleft
properties to move the element relative to its normal position.

Document Flow: The space originally occupied by the element is preserved, even when it is moved. This means that other elements in the document flow will behave as if the relatively positioned element is still in its original location.
Z-Index: The
z-index
property can be used to control the stacking order of the element relative to its siblings.Containing Block: For a relatively positioned element, the containing block is formed by the edge of the content box of the nearest block-level, table cell, or inline-block ancestor box.
Examples
Basic Positioning
HTML:

CSS:

}
In this example, .relative-box
will be moved 10px down and 10px to the right from its normal position.
Stacking Elements
HTML:

<div class="another-box">Box 2</div>
CSS:
.relative-box {
position: relative;
z-index: 1;
}
.another-box {
position: relative;
top: -20px; /* Moves up, overlapping .relative-box */
z-index: 0;
}
Here, .another-box
will overlap .relative-box
, but because of the z-index
values, .relative-box
will appear on top.
